Son of Oscar and Gilda (Nutile) Thyng. He was a graduate of Whitcomb High School in Bethel, Vt., and attended Franklin Institute in Boston.
He was an eight year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was proud of the fact that he served two tours in Vietnam. He established a construction firm in Massachusetts after his discharge from the USAF, and he then formed Landsco Corp. in Deering in 1978, a few years after moving there with his family. He operated that construction business for 20 years until his semi-retirement. He then did consulting work in construction related industries. In 2001 he was employed by the Hillsboro-Deering School District as clerk of the works for the new middle school and took great pride that he was able to help bring the project in under budget and on time. He retired for health reasons in 2006.
He was active in many civic and youth organizations prior to his illness. He was a member of the Hillsboro-Deering School Board for 13 years, as well as a former member of the Deering Conservation Commission, the Deering Historical Society, the Executive Committee of Cub Scout Pack 73 in Hillsboro, and a former soccer coach with the Hillsboro Youth Athletic Association. He was also a former member of the Deering Fire Department.
He was an avid reader, interested in politics, and concerned about the future that we are leaving for our children and grandchildren. Above all, his family came first in all that he did.
Family members include his wife of 40 years, Rosemary (Phelan) Thyng of Deering; son John Thyng Jr. and wife, Maria, of Deering; son Michael Thyng and wife, Heather, of Hillsboro; daughter Patricia Brunton and husband, Mark, of Brighton, Mass.; daughter Kristine Vargas and husband, Richard, of Lexington, Mass.; daughter Rosemary Thyng of Brighton, MA; and two granddaughters, Kathryn Thyng of Hillsboro and Sinead Brunton of Brighton. He is also survived by his mother, Gilda Thyng of Methuen, Mass.; brother George Thyng of Williston, Vt.; sisters Linda O'Reilly of Salem and Lauretta Martin of Essex Junction, Vt., as well as many nieces and nephews.
