MIDDLEBURY — David Richard Macken, 86, died Dec. 25, 2014, at Waterbury Hospital after a brave battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born Feb. 11, 1928, in Boston, Mass., to the late George E. and Maud V. (Russell) Macken. In 1934, the family moved to Pittsburg, Maine, where Dave graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1947. He then went on to college at the University of Maine, graduating in 1951 and majoring in journalism. Dave was the first Macken to ever graduate from college and was also the first Macken to live past the age of 80.
Dave worked for several newspapers in Maine in the 1950s. Until retirement he was employed by several insurance companies in various New England States for 35 years, working as an investigator and adjuster.
He is survived by a son, Dale S. Macken of Manchester; a daughter-in-law, Anita Macken, also of Manchester; a daughter, Sharon G. Macken of Middlebury; two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Kelly Macken, both of Plantsville; and his former wife and best friend, June (Cameron) Macken of Middlebury.
Private graveside services will be held in the spring in Butler Cemetery, Deering, N.H.
